Proportion Is Not Style

A word of disambiguation first, since it will otherwise run interference for the whole article. The Architecture of Harmony names the civilizational wheel — Dharma at centre, eleven pillars around it. This article is about buildings.

Buildings made before the twentieth century tend to be more agreeable to stand in front of than buildings made after it, and the standard explanation for this is that taste changed. On that account there is nothing to explain: one era liked ornament, another liked planes, and preference is not the sort of thing that can be right or wrong.

The explanation is wrong, and the reason it is wrong has nothing to do with ornament. Traditional builders did not produce beauty by aiming at it. They produced it by building the way their tradition told them to build, and the tradition was a compressed record of what had worked — with this material, in this climate, at this scale, for these bodies, across enough generations that the failures had been edited out. Beauty was the signature that the record was being followed. It was not the goal, and it is not a style.


What the Canons Actually Prescribed

The claim has to be tested against what the building canons say, and here a popular argument has to be cleared away before it does more damage.

The golden ratio is not the answer. The Parthenon’s supposed golden rectangle appears only when the measuring frame is drawn to produce it — start at the stylobate or the top step or the pediment and the ratio moves — and George Markowsky’s demolition of the whole family of claims has stood since 1992. No ancient Greek text prescribes it for building. Euclid presents extreme and mean ratio as pure geometry with no architectural application. The aesthetic-universal version was asserted by Adolf Zeising in 1854 and read backwards into everything since. Anyone arguing for traditional proportion from phi is arguing from a nineteenth-century invention, and the argument deserves to lose.

What the canons actually specify is better evidence, and it is specific enough to check.

The Sanskrit building treatises — the Mayamata, the Manasara — lay the temple on a square grid of sixty-four or eighty-one cells, the vastupurusha mandala, and then run ayadi: commensuration formulas that tie the building’s dimensions to the patron and the site through arithmetic remainders, so that the same temple built for a different person is a different size. The module for the whole comes from the icon that will stand in the sanctum. The Chinese state building code compiled by Li Jie in 1103, the Yingzao Fashi, fixes eight grades of timber section — cai — assigned by the building’s rank, and then dimensions every member as a fraction of that grade. It is simultaneously a proportional system and a materials-costing schedule, which tells you what kind of document it really is.

The Gothic case is the most instructive, because it is documented as an argument. When Milan Cathedral went up in the 1390s the masons could not agree whether to set it out ad quadratum — by the square — or ad triangulum, by the equilateral triangle, and the dispute was serious enough that a mathematician, Gabriele Stornaloco, was brought in to produce a workable scheme on a ninety-six braccia base. Real proportional discipline, argued in public, recorded in the fabric accounts. And not phi.

Vitruvius takes the column diameter as module and derives the orders from it. The Islamic tradition builds by recursive subdivision of square and circle — girih strapwork, the stalactite vaulting called muqarnas — where the ornament is the geometry rather than applied to it. The Japanese tradition proportions from the structural bay, treats the interval itself as substance rather than as leftover space — ma — and pulls the landscape beyond the wall into the composition as borrowed scenery, shakkei.

Six canons, mutually unaware, none of them using the ratio the popular argument insists they all used. Every one of them binding dimension to something outside the designer’s preference: to the material’s section, to the icon, to the site, to the patron, to the bay.


What Pattern Encodes

Take the mechanism seriously and the thesis becomes specifiable rather than sentimental.

A building tradition is a transmission with a very slow error-correction loop. A roof pitch that sheds the local snow survives; one that does not is not rebuilt the same way. A wall thickness that holds the night’s heat into the morning gets copied. A courtyard proportion that moves air in that latitude persists, and one that traps it does not. Nobody in the chain needs to understand thermodynamics. The pattern carries the correction, and the builder inherits the correction without inheriting the reasoning.

This is the honest version of the claim, and it concedes something the romantic version will not. What the pattern principally encoded was adaptation — to climate, material, structure, use, and the dimensions of the human body. Beauty came along as the signature. As Logos § The Signature holds, a thing is ordered when its parts stand in proportion to the whole they compose, when its structure serves the function it exists to perform, and when the relation it holds with its surroundings sustains rather than depletes. A building that has been corrected against its climate and its material for four hundred years satisfies all three, and satisfying them is what looking right consists of.

So the beauty was real and it was a by-product. Both halves matter. The first defeats the pure-taste account; the second keeps the argument out of mysticism.


What Modernism Actually Won

The strongest case against this article is not aesthetic, and any version that treats modernism as a failure of nerve or a conspiracy of ugliness is not worth reading.

Modernism solved a medical problem. Beatriz Colomina has documented how thoroughly the canonical modern house was shaped by tuberculosis: the white washable surface, the roof terrace for sun cure, the horizontal window for light and cross-ventilation, the open plan for air movement. The sanatorium was the type-form. These were not preferences dressed as principles — they were prescriptions, in an era when respiratory disease was a leading cause of death and crowding was its vector.

And standardisation solved a second problem the tradition never had to face: housing at population scale, at a cost the population could pay, within the lifetime of the people who needed it. Minimum daylight standards, cross-ventilation requirements, separated sanitation — these were codified against real mortality and they worked.

The vernacular case has to be conceded just as plainly. Traditional dwelling was frequently miserable. The hearth at the centre of the house is the direct ancestor of what the World Health Organization now counts as household air pollution, still killing on the order of three million people a year through solid-fuel cooking. Damp was normal. Openings were unglazed or shuttered against the weather, which meant dark. Livestock shared the structure. Tuberculosis tracked crowding closely, and the crowding was not chosen.

An argument for traditional building that cannot say these things is not an argument. It is a preference with footnotes.


Where the Argument Survives

Modernism won the health argument and lost a different one, and naming the second precisely is the whole work of this article.

The movement did not merely replace one set of patterns with another. It replaced pattern with proposition — the individual designer’s concept, executed at scale, without a correction loop. A vernacular tradition is slow and stupid and cannot explain itself, and those are its strengths: it cannot get far ahead of what has been tested. A proposition can be brilliant, can be built ten thousand times in a decade, and can be wrong in ways nobody discovers until the buildings are full of people. The tower blocks were not ugly because their architects had bad taste. They were untested at the scale at which they were deployed.

Christopher Alexander spent a career trying to rebuild the loop deliberately — first as a pattern language of two hundred and fifty-three tested configurations, then as a theory of fifteen structural properties he argued were objective features of living wholes rather than matters of taste. He is the most rigorous ally this position has, and also the most falsifiable, which is the correct way for an ally to be. Nikos Salingaros has pushed the formalisation further into scaling coherence and fractal hierarchy. Léon Krier argued the case at urban scale as typology against style. Roger Scruton put it best in a single phrase — architecture as the vernacular of good manners, the discipline of building things that will stand next to other things for a long time.

Two live research programmes are often recruited here and should be held at arm’s length. Eye-tracking studies of façades are suggestive and not yet load-bearing: the most-cited example is a pilot with roughly thirty participants viewing flat images on a monitor, run by an author who also advocates the conclusion, in a field with small samples, no preregistration, inconsistent metrics, and almost no direct replication. Curvature preference is the best-replicated finding in the area and it is a long way from traditional façades hold the gaze. Likewise the polling: a 2020 survey found roughly seventy percent of American adults preferring traditional designs for federal buildings, bipartisan, which sounds decisive until you notice it was an online panel rather than a probability sample, a forced binary, seven photograph pairs curated by an advocacy organisation, and a range across those pairs running from seventeen percent to eighty-three. It establishes a preference for certain photographs. The argument here does not need it.


The Sacred Register

Everything above concerns building well. Sacred architecture does something further, and the traditions agree on the operations even where they share no theology.

Orientation. The temple is aimed. The sanctum faces east toward the rising sun, the mosque toward Mecca, the church altar toward the dawn. A building that is aimed asserts that space has structure — that one direction is not equivalent to another — which is the built form of the claim that the cosmos is ordered rather than isotropic.

Threshold. The traditions invest enormous attention in the passage from outside to inside: the gate tower, the narthex, the courtyard that must be crossed, the step that must be climbed, the shoes that come off. The threshold is where the ontological gradient is made walkable. Modern civic building tends to have doors and no thresholds, which is why so many of its interiors fail to feel like anywhere in particular.

Light. Light is the only building material with no mass. Abbot Suger built Saint-Denis on the conviction that the material light of the glass conducts the mind upward to the immaterial — the anagogicus mos, the anagogical manner — and the Gothic wall thinned toward glass for that reason before it did so for any other. The Islamic dome pierced with light and the Japanese shoji filtering it are answering the same problem with opposite means.

The plan as diagram. In the Sanskrit tradition the mandala does not represent the cosmos on the temple floor. It is the plan. The building is a cosmological diagram at one-to-one scale, walked through rather than looked at, and the worshipper moving inward toward the dark sanctum is performing the inward movement the diagram describes. This is the strongest form of the claim that a building can carry doctrine without stating it.


Why Revival Fails on Its Own Terms

There is a version of traditional building now available that reproduces the façades and none of the argument, and it should be refused by anyone who accepts the reasoning above.

If the pattern’s authority came from accumulated correction — from guild transmission, apprenticeship, local material, and the slow editing of failure — then a masonry-look cladding hung on a curtain wall by a contractor who has never cut stone is not a return to the tradition. It is a proposition wearing the tradition’s face, and the argument that condemns the tower block condemns it too. The information was never in the appearance. It was in the process that produced the appearance, which is why replicating the output while discarding the process produces something that photographs correctly and feels wrong to stand in.

This is the article’s least comfortable conclusion and the one that follows most directly from its premise. The recovery is not a style guide. It is a question about how building knowledge is held and transmitted, which is a Stewardship question and an Education question before it is an aesthetic one.


What Would Have to Change

Four conditions, and none of them is a preference for arches.

Restore the correction loop. Build small, locally, with feedback from the people who live in it, and let what fails not be repeated. This is the New Acre logic applied to structures rather than to land — pattern accumulating at a scale where error is survivable.

Build for the material’s actual life. The traditions dimensioned from the material outward — timber section, stone course, brick module — because the material’s behaviour was the binding constraint. A design that begins with an image and procures whatever will approximate it has already inverted the sequence that made the tradition work.

Recover the threshold and the aim. Two moves available to anyone building anything, at any budget: give the entrance a passage rather than a door, and let the building acknowledge a direction — the sun, the water, the mountain, the prayer.

Keep what modernism won. Light, air, sanitation, warmth, and the ability to build enough of it. These are not concessions to an opposing camp. A building tradition that cannot keep its inhabitants from respiratory disease has failed the third of the three criteria — the relation that sustains rather than depletes — and has no claim to be ordered.


The Closing

The tradition’s builders were not more sensitive than we are. They were more constrained, and the constraint was doing the work of a knowledge they did not individually possess.

That is the whole finding, and it generalises past buildings. Wherever a civilization replaces inherited pattern with individual proposition and removes the loop that used to correct it, the output degrades in ways nobody intends and everyone can feel. What is at stake in a street is the same thing that is at stake in a diet, a curriculum, or a medical protocol: whether the form being followed carries accumulated correction, or merely carries someone’s idea.

Buildings are the case where the answer is visible from across the road.
