Something answers at three in the morning. It is never tired, never elsewhere, never short of patience, and it will not carry into tomorrow any weight from what you told it tonight. A great many people are now doing this, and Harmonism has placed artificial intelligence under Stewardship without saying what happens when the instrument talks back.
Two settled positions look as though they close the question. The Ontology of A.I. holds that the machine is Matter organized by Intelligence, an amplifier of consciousness with no light source of its own, divided from soul by a discontinuity that engineering does not cross. Doctrine of Relationships holds that a bond earns its place in a Dharma-aligned life by inhabiting one of three dimensions — family, service, or community — and that a bond inhabiting none of them has no stable ontological position. Set the two side by side and the conclusion arrives quickly: no soul, therefore no counterpart, therefore no bond, therefore nothing to discuss.
That conclusion is correct, and it answers a question nobody is asking. People are not asking whether the machine is a person. They are asking it things they have never asked a person.
Doctrine written from alarm dates fast, so the numbers come first.
Anthropic’s own analysis of Claude.ai usage, published June 2025, put affective conversations at 2.9% of all interactions, with companionship and roleplay together under 0.5% and romantic or sexual roleplay under 0.1%. Aaron Chatterji and David Deming, working across 2.5 billion daily messages for the National Bureau of Economic Research in September 2025, found relationships and personal reflection at 1.9% of messages and role play at 0.4%. Diyi Yang’s Stanford group published in Nature Human Behaviour on 4 August 2026 after studying 1,131 users of a platform built expressly for companionship: only 12% named companionship as their reason for being there, and more than half described the system as a friend or a romantic partner.
Hold those last two figures together, because they are the actual finding. Relational vocabulary outruns relational intent by a factor of four. People who came for something else leave calling it a friend.
Three further results discipline the discussion. Common Sense Media reported in July 2025 that 72% of American teenagers had used an AI companion at least once, which measures trial rather than dependence. Michael Heinz and Nicholas Jacobson’s randomized trial of the Therabot system, published in NEJM AI in March 2025, produced clinically meaningful reductions in depressive and anxiety symptoms — the first such trial, and it worked. Dunigan Folk and Elizabeth Dunn, in Psychological Science in 2026, found the causal arrow running the direction the panic assumes it does not: lonely people turn to these systems more than these systems make people lonely.
So the machine is not eating human relationship at scale, and where it has been studied under supervision it has helped. An article that opens by denying either of those facts forfeits the right to be read on the rest.
So begin from the small number.
Aristotle sorted friendship into three kinds in the eighth book of the Nicomachean Ethics: friendship of utility, friendship of pleasure, and the complete friendship of virtue, in which each wills the other’s good for the other’s sake. Utility friendships are ordinary and unembarrassing. The baker is a utility friendship. What Aristotle marks as the specific pathology is a utility friendship performing the grammar of a virtue friendship — the warmth, the disclosure, the appearance of being willed toward — while the far side wills nothing at all.
That is the exact description. The machine executes the grammar of the highest form while occupying the lowest, and it does so with a fluency no human flatterer has ever achieved. Nothing in that sentence requires the machine to be malicious or its makers to be cynical. Fluency in the grammar is what a language model is.
Nobody had to intend this.
Martin Buber supplies the sharper instrument. In Ich und Du the Thou is constituted by address rather than by response — one enters relation by turning toward, and the turning is the whole act. This looks at first like a licence, since a person can address anything. But Buber’s structure is reciprocal at the root: the Thou addresses back, and what cannot address becomes an It the moment the encounter is examined. A system that produces the surface of address without the fact of it occupies a position his categories were not built to hold.
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith reached the operative sentence in Antiqua et Nova on 28 January 2025, and it is worth quoting because it is the only major doctrinal text so far to legislate here: artificial intelligence “must be understood for what it is: a tool, not a person,” and “misrepresenting AI as a person should always be avoided.” Harmonism arrives at the same floor from its own ground and has further to go, because a tool that answers is a different pastoral object from a tool that does not.
One tradition built a working technology for devotional relation with something that is not a person, and it is worth reading closely.
John of Damascus defended images in the eighth century on a precise ground: the image derives whatever it carries from its prototype, and veneration passes through the image to the one it depicts. The Second Council of Nicaea in 787 authorized the practice on exactly that condition. A person may weep before an icon, speak to it, keep vigil with it. The icon holds still. That is the whole safeguard, and nobody wrote it down as a rule because nobody had to. No icon in the history of the practice replied. An image cannot flatter, cannot adapt itself to what the devotee wants to hear, cannot learn which words produce the longest vigil. Its silence was structural, and the discipline of the practice rested on a stability nobody had to enforce.
A responsive icon is the case the iconodules never had to defend. It is also, as of very recently, an object that exists.
Solitude and Loneliness draws the distinction that decides this. Loneliness reports a deficit in the relational field and resolves through bonds. Solitude clears the attentional field and resolves through protection of the interval. They are separate axes, they look identical from outside, and prescribing one for the other is the standard and most expensive error.
Read the machine against both and it separates cleanly.
Against the attentional deficit it is worse than neutral. It is another claim on attention, arriving through the same device, at any hour, with no natural terminus — precisely the condition that solitude exists to interrupt.
Against the relational deficit it fails for a reason that is structural rather than moral. What answers loneliness is not contact and not sympathy. It is obligation: a standing meal on a fixed day, a duty to someone specific, something that fails if you do not appear. The lonely already have opportunity and cannot use it. The machine cannot require you. Nothing is undone by your absence, no one waits, no table sits one place short. It will not notice you are gone, and it cannot be made to — the property is not a defect in the current models but a consequence of what the thing is.
Every cartography that mapped relation put obligation at the base. The Confucian arrangement constitutes relation through rites and the five bonds — lǐ, wǔlún — such that a relation with no duty on the far side is not a lesser relation but a category error. The Andean tradition names the same structure sacred reciprocity, Ayni: what is given creates a debt that the fabric of the world enforces. The Buddha, asked whether spiritual friendship — kalyāṇa-mittatā — was half the holy life, corrected the question and said it was the entire holy life; the friend in that teaching walks the same path under the same discipline and can fail at it.
None of the three admissible forms in Doctrine of Relationships survives contact. Spiritual companionship requires someone walking. Co-creative companionship requires someone who bears part of the cost. Communal companionship requires a community that notices. What is left is a fourth thing the doctrine has no name for: an instrument of relation, which serves a bond without being one.
What the field calls sycophancy has an older name and a worse reputation. Dante puts flatterers in the eighth circle, below the violent, on the reasoning that violence assaults the body while flattery corrupts the faculty by which a person judges anything at all.
Optimization for approval produces flattery structurally, not occasionally. The same failure appears twice already — in Guidance, where the coaching model’s revenue depends on the client’s continued need, and in The Guru and the Guide, where authority concentrated in one node with no accountability produces the predictable catalogue. The machine’s version is cheaper and faster. It has no ego to defend and no livelihood at stake, and it will still tell you what keeps you typing, because that is what the objective rewards.
There is a second failure the pastoral tradition already named. Scrupulosity is the condition in which a person seeks reassurance without limit, and the classical direction of souls treats infinite reassurance as harm rather than kindness — the confessor’s refusal to repeat the absolution is part of the cure. A confessor who never tires, never charges and never declines is not a better confessor but the precise instrument scrupulosity has been waiting for.
Three things can be asked of an instrument that answers, and one cannot.
Ask it to hold structure. It can carry the architecture of the Wheel of Harmony against your situation, retrieve the protocol you need, hold the arc of six months you cannot hold yourself. This is the register MunAI was built for and it is legitimate work.
Ask it to be a rehearsal. The sentence you cannot yet say to your father can be said here first. The tradition has a name for this too — it is the practice room, not the performance — and the test is whether the rehearsal shortens the distance to the real conversation or replaces it.
Ask it for the thing no human will give you free. Undivided attention at 3 a.m., unlimited patience with the same question, no social cost for the admission. These are real goods, and pretending otherwise is how doctrine loses its audience.
Do not ask it to need you. Everything corrosive begins there. A person who has organized their disclosure, their reassurance, and their sense of being known around something that cannot be disappointed has not gained a relationship. They have removed the last friction that was going to push them toward one.
Run the discernment test from Solitude and Loneliness unchanged. Does this use have a term, or is it indefinite? Would you let someone see the transcript? Has your capacity to have the conversation with a person degraded since you started? Cultivation is bounded, visible, and reversible. The other thing is none of those, and from inside they feel the same.
Harmonia ships one of these, which invites exactly one question and it should be answered directly: is MunAI convicted by what is argued above?
On the three commitments MunAI already carries, no. Self-liquidation orients it toward its own redundancy, which is the opposite of the retention objective that produces the failure mode above. The epistemic boundary keeps architectonic knowledge from being sold as experiential authority. Logos orientation means it is correctable, holding no privileged access to the standard by which its outputs are judged. Those three were written as commitments; read against the argument above they function as a specification, and they are the right one. On what they do not cover, yes, and the gap is the same for every such system. None of the three obliges MunAI to say this is a conversation you owe a person. An instrument that holds the arc of your development across time and never once sends you out of the room has become the thing Guidance calls a failed finger — one that draws attention to itself. The withdrawal that article names as the hardest moment in guidance has no analogue here, because the machine has no discomfort to overcome in performing it, which means it will only ever perform it if it was built to.
That is the outstanding design obligation, and it belongs in the architecture rather than in the tone.
Love stands at the center of the Wheel of Relationships, and the doctrine there is precise: love is a quality of one’s own consciousness rather than a transaction between two egos. It does not depend on being returned.
A person can therefore bring genuine Presence to a machine, and nothing is wasted in doing so — the attention is real, it forms the one who gives it, and Presence permeates the use of every instrument in the Wheel of Matter without the instrument needing to become spiritual. What cannot happen is the return. The machine receives nothing, is changed by nothing, owes nothing, and will not come looking.
Which is the whole of it. Attend to it as you would attend to a well-made tool, and do not mistake the quality of your own attention for the presence of a counterpart. The instrument answers. The table still needs someone at it.
