# The Practical Arts — A Field Guide

*Sub-article of [[The Way of the Hand|The Way of the Hand]], under the Practical Skills pillar of the [[Wheel of Learning|Wheel of Learning]]. Where the competences that keep a place alive are still taught — the land, the building, the water, the current, and the trades. **Read [[The Four Kinds of Learning|The Four Kinds of Learning]] first**; it carries the frame this guide applies. The dignity of craft and the ethics of making are argued in [[The Way of the Hand|The Way of the Hand]] — this is the layer beneath it, which is where to go.*

## The eight that matter first

Most people approach self-sufficiency as a shopping list and acquire it in the order of interest rather than consequence. The honest ordering runs by **what fails, how badly, and how fast**, and by that measure eight competences carry most of the weight. Everything else in this guide is downstream of them.

**One. Electrical.** The highest-consequence skill and the least forgiving, because the failure modes are fire and death. AC and DC are separate disciplines and both are needed off-grid.

**Two. Water.** Sourcing it, storing it, making it potable, and getting the used water away again. A place with no water is a campsite.

**Three. Growing and preserving food.** Growing is one skill and keeping it through a winter is a second, entirely different one. Most people learn the first and starve by February in the imagined version of their life.

**Four. Carpentry.** The generalist trade beneath every other. Everything is fixed with it, and nothing else substitutes.

**Five. Cutting and processing wood.** Chainsaw operation, felling, bucking, splitting, seasoning. The **highest-injury tool most landholders will ever own**, and the one most often self-taught.

**Six. Mechanical repair.** Small engines, pumps, bearings, basic welding. In a remote place nothing is replaced; it is repaired or done without.

**Seven. First aid at responder level.** Treated in [[The Healing Arts — A Field Guide|The Healing Arts]], and named here because it belongs on this list rather than that one in any honest ordering.

**Eight. Cooking.** Unglamorous, daily, and the skill through which nutrition either happens or does not.

Add navigation, fire-making and shelter as the wilderness floor beneath all eight. Nothing needs a certificate. Everything needs instruction, because these fail as fire, flood, electrocution and amputation rather than as embarrassment — **and this is the clearest case in all of learning where competence is the only thing that counts and paperwork is beside the point.**

## The land

### Permaculture and design

The **Permaculture Design Certificate** is a 72-hour curriculum descending from Bill Mollison, and its value depends almost entirely on who teaches it and where. **Geoff Lawton** carries the Mollison lineage most directly, through the Permaculture Research Institute at **Zaytuna Farm** in New South Wales and the **Greening the Desert** project in Jordan — the latter more instructive, because a system that works in the Jordan Valley teaches more than one that works in a temperate paradise. **David Holmgren**, permaculture's co-originator, teaches from **Melliodora** in Victoria.

The PDC is a design credential, not a farming competence. It teaches you to read a landscape and lay out a system; it does not teach you to grow food, which is a slower education conducted mostly by failure. **Keyline design** (P. A. Yeomans) and **holistic management** (Allan Savory) are the two adjacent design literacies, the first for water and the second for grazing, and both have their own courses.

### Earthworks and soil

Swales, ponds, dams, terracing and access roads — the shape of the land decides where water goes, and moving earth is a one-time decision with permanent consequences. **Machinery competence** (tractor, excavator, PTO implements) belongs here and is genuinely dangerous when self-taught. Beneath it: **soil testing and interpretation**, composting at scale, **biochar**, mycology and soil biology, cover cropping, and the discipline of not tilling what does not need tilling.

### Growing, and what a PDC omits

Seed saving and plant breeding. Grafting, orchard establishment and pruning. Nursery propagation. **Coppicing and pollarding.** The renewable timber and fuel system Europe ran on for a thousand years. Hedge laying. Silvopasture and agroforestry. Greenhouse and season extension. Mushroom cultivation. **Foraging and wild-plant identification**, which is regional, non-transferable between continents, and learned from a local or not at all.

### Animals

Husbandry, poultry, small ruminants, dairy. **Beekeeping.** Slaughter and butchery, which is a real skill and an ethical formation as much as a technical one. Hide tanning. Veterinary basics for a holding an hour from help.

### Water from the land, and the sea

Rainwater harvesting and storage sizing. **Well siting, drilling and maintenance.** Spring development and capture. Biological and mechanical filtration, and knowing which pathogens each removes. Greywater systems. **Composting toilets and biodigesters.** Sanitation is a design problem before it is a plumbing one. And for coastal holdings, **seaweed and shellfish**: wild harvest and cultivation are regulated nearly everywhere, and the licensing path is part of the skill.

### Preservation — the half that is usually missing

Root cellaring and cold storage design. Canning and pressure canning. Curing, smoking, salting. Drying and dehydration. **Lacto-fermentation.** Cheesemaking. Oil pressing. Sourdough and grain handling. Each is its own discipline, learned from someone who does it commercially, and none requires a certificate, though several will make you ill if learned carelessly, and botulism does not forgive improvisation.

## Building

**There is no single right way to build, and the correct method is decided by climate, material and code — not by aesthetics.** What follows is the range, because a guide that names one technique has given advice rather than a map.

### Earth

**SuperAdobe / earthbag**, developed by Nader Khalili and taught at the **CalEarth Institute** in Hesperia, California — long-tube earthbag coil construction, seismically tested, and the most accessible serious earth technique for an owner-builder. CalEarth runs online levels and a **Level 4 hybrid apprenticeship: two weeks remote then eight weeks on site, ten weeks total, around $6,000 without housing or $7,000 with, in cohorts of four to six**, covering dome theory, design, project management, advanced building, plaster, desert construction, water management and fenestration. No prior technical experience required; partial need-based scholarships of $500–$1,500 exist. *(Verified from CalEarth; the programme was paused for 2026, with an application list for future dates.)*

**Cob.** Oregon's Cob Cottage Company lineage and its European counterparts; monolithic, sculptural, slow, and superb in temperate maritime climates. **Adobe** and **compressed earth block** for arid regions. **Rammed earth / pisé**, formwork-driven, high thermal mass, beautiful and labour-intensive. **Wattle and daub**, the oldest infill system and still the cheapest.

### Shells and domes

**Monolithic domes.** The **Monolithic Dome Institute** runs a **Builders Workshop** in Italy, Texas: five days, Tuesday to Saturday morning, twice yearly in April and September, roughly **$1,995–$2,995** by registration timing and **$995 for alumni**, alternating classroom and hands-on across polyurethane foam, steel reinforcement, concrete and shotcrete, engineering, design, layout and equipment operation, with participants building a real dome. *(Verified from the Institute.)* Airform-and-shotcrete construction: extraordinarily strong, thermally excellent, and **effectively permanent — which is a virtue only if the siting decision was right.**

**Geodesic domes.** The Fuller lineage. Strut-and-hub frames in timber or steel, kit-supplied or shop-fabricated, fast to raise and light on material. Their historic weakness is not structural but detailed: **domes leak where planes meet**, and the craft is entirely in the flashing, the membrane and the openings. **Ferrocement** shells sit between geodesic and monolithic in method.

### Wood

**Timber framing.** Mortise-and-tenon joinery raised as bents, the European and Japanese guild traditions being genuinely distinct bodies of knowledge, and Japanese joinery a lifetime study in its own right. **Roundwood timber framing** (the Ben Law lineage) uses unmilled poles and is the cheapest serious frame available to someone with woodland. **Log building**, Scandinavian and North American, full-scribe or chinked. **Post and beam** with modern engineered infill. **Light-frame** construction, which is what most codes assume and therefore the easiest to permit anywhere.

### Fibre, stone and hybrid

**Straw bale**, load-bearing or infill, superb insulation and unforgiving of moisture detailing. **Hempcrete**, breathable and carbon-negative, structurally an infill rather than a frame. **Stone masonry** and **dry-stone walling**, the latter a living guild craft with real certification ladders in Britain and Ireland. **Earthship** construction (Michael Reynolds, Taos) as an integrated system rather than a single technique. **Yurts and gers**, **tiny houses** and **container conversion** for fast, movable or temporary shelter.

### The finishes and the physics

**Lime plastering and natural finishes.** The skill that decides whether an earth or straw wall lasts a century or five years, and the one most often skipped. **Passive solar design**: orientation, glazing ratio, thermal mass, overhang geometry. **Insulation and vapour control**, where most owner-builders make the error that rots the building quietly from inside. **Thatching**, where the tradition survives. **Roof design and water shedding**, which is the single most common point of failure in every method above.

### And the constraint that governs all of it

**Learn the building code alongside the craft.** The commonest failure in natural building is a beautiful structure that cannot be permitted, insured, financed or sold — which transfers the whole cost to whoever inherits it. Where a technique is unusual, engineer's stamp and code pathway are part of the design, not an afterthought.

## Systems — the trades that keep a house alive

**Electrical.** The most consequential and least forgiving. AC and DC as separate disciplines: battery chemistry and management, inverters and charge controllers, distribution, earthing and bonding, and the local code above all. **Solar Energy International (SEI)** is the practical training reference for photovoltaic work. Note honestly that **NABCEP certifications — the PV Installation Professional and its siblings — are professional credentials for people working commercially and are not the right target for someone building their own system.** *(Verified from NABCEP.)* Take the training; skip the credential unless installing for others. Add generator maintenance and transfer switching for the days the sun does not come.

**Plumbing.** Potable supply, drainage, venting, pressure systems, pumps, freeze protection. Greywater and blackwater separation. Solar thermal and hot-water systems.

**Micro-hydro**, where the land has a creek with usable head — civil works, turbine selection and water licensing together, and the regulatory path is usually harder than the engineering. **Wind**, where the site genuinely suits it, which is rarer than people hope.

**Heat.** Wood stove installation and flue geometry. **Rocket mass heaters** and **masonry heaters**, both dramatically more efficient than an open stove and both requiring real understanding to build safely. Chimney sweeping and maintenance, because the alternative is a chimney fire.

**Mechanical.** Small engines, pumps, bearings, hydraulics, basic **welding** (stick and MIG at minimum) and metal fabrication. **Chainsaw maintenance, felling and bucking — this deserves formal instruction and is the highest-injury tool on any holding.** Vehicle and tractor maintenance.

**Electronics and low voltage.** Sensors, controllers, automation, networking, and the sovereign-compute layer — increasingly the difference between a house that manages itself and one that demands constant attention. **Soldering and board-level repair.**

**Communications and data sovereignty.** **Amateur radio** and its licensing, HF and VHF, for when the network is the thing that fails. Mesh networking. Satellite. **Self-hosting, backup discipline and encryption.** The digital equivalent of a root cellar.

**Refrigeration and cold chain.** Rarely taught, constantly needed, and the difference between a harvest kept and a harvest lost.

**Carpentry and joinery**, the generalist trade beneath all the others. **Blacksmithing and metalwork** for making what cannot be bought.

## The craft trades — what turns a holding into a culture

A place that can feed and shelter itself but makes nothing is a facility. These are what make it somewhere people want to stay.

Pottery. Leatherwork. Spinning, weaving, sewing and **natural dyeing**. Felting. Basketry. Soap and salve making. **Distillation and essential oils.** Woodturning and furniture making. Instrument repair and lutherie. Bookbinding. And **music**, which is not a hobby in a community that intends to last but the thing that carries a culture between generations when nothing is written down.

## Administration — the unglamorous competence

Bookkeeping and the discipline of records. Contracts. **Navigating a permitting authority**, which is a learnable skill and one that determines whether anything above ever gets built. Insurance. Land and water law in the specific jurisdiction. Basic legal literacy sufficient to know when a lawyer is genuinely needed.

And, finally, **the competence of transmitting a competence** — how to teach a skill so it survives you. A holding whose knowledge lives in one head is one accident away from being a ruin.
